the history of film
the history of film started with thomas edison. known for many of his inventions such as the light bulb edison was a keen inventor and always looked forward. one of these ambitions was to make pictures move. though this was done with picture carousels they did not run smoothly enough. from this the black mariah was invented. this was used to utilise light and to be turned in the direction of the sun to add extra light. edison made short films here of short scenes which were seen through a one person viewing device.
after ediisons breakthrough luminere brothers attempted to show films to a wider audience. their first film shown was a short clip of factory wokers going home. other short productions included a train moving.
the birth of editing
the official first instance of editing was when george melier's camera jammed and street cars disapeared. this technique was used for different purpsodes in film for exmaple to show something disappearing. moving on now to another innovator in the film industry george albert smith. smith was the first to use a tracking shot on a train this was named the phantom shot, he was also the first to use a close up in a film called little kitten. the close up zoomed in on the kitten and showed it doing actions .
in 1903 key shot elements were intorduced, and for the first time different perspecitves were introduced and the same scnes were shown on the inside and the outside of a burning building. every scene used continuity cutting, double exposure and parallel ediitng were used to show MEANWHILE . RWEVERSE SHOT ANGLES WERE ALSO STARTING TO BE USED THIS THEREFORE GIVING FREEDOM TO FILM FROM ANY ANGLE AND TO STILL SEEE WHATS GOING ON.
NOW ONTO THE INTRODUCTION OF THE FIRST MOVIE STAR, FLORENCE LAWRENCE POSTERS AND PROPOGANDA WERE INTODUCED TO SHOW EMPATHY AND EMOTION TOWARDS ACTORS AND FILM STARS. IN MOVIES CLOSE UPS OF ACTORS WERE INTODUCED TO SHOW EMOTION AND FOR THE AUDIENCE TO EMPATHISE WITH THE CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIES. MANY MOVIES WERE SEEN IN NICKELODEONS WHICH WERE SMALL CINEMAS
IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FILM INDUSTRY MANY ADVANCEMENTS CAME ALONG THESE INCLUDING DREAM SEQUENCES IN FILMS LIKE THE MYSTERIOUS X. NATURAL LIGHTING WAS ALSO STARTING TO BE USED AND ALSO HAXAN WAS INTRODUCED WHERE DIFFERENT LIGHTING WAS USED. MANY NEW FILMS USED STORIES WITHIN STORIES THIS ADDED EFFECT AS THEN THERE WAS MORE OF A LOT PLOT TO IT. IN SCNADANAVIA RE EXPOSURE WAS USED TO SHOW A GHOST COMING FROM A BODY THIS TECHNOLOGY WAS REVOLOUTIONARY FOR THE TIME.
SLOWLY AS THE FILM INDUSTRY IN THE USA BOOMED THERE WERE PATENTS INTORUCED TO STOP PEOPLE USINGTHE LATHOM LOOP WHICH STOPPED PEOPLE FROM RUNNING SMALL CINEMAS UNLESS THEY PAID THE TAX THE LATHOM LOOP STOPPED FILM SNAPPING WHICH WAS A GROWING ISSUE. HOLLYWOOD HOWEVER DIDNT HAVE THE TAX LEADING MORE PEOPLE TO IT. AS THE INDUSTRY GREW BIGGER SETS WERE NEED THEREFORE STUDIOS WERE BUILT AND THE FIRDT ONE WAS BUILT IN 1911. FEATURE FILMS WERE SOMETHING WHICH WAS QUITE NEW AND THE FIRST ONE WAS FILMED OUTISDE IN AUSTRALIA.THE FIRST HOLLYWOOD FEATURE FILM WAS CALLED THE SQAUW MAN THIS USED AN BROKE THE 180 DEGREE RULE. FROM THERE ON SOME OF THE BEST FILMS WE KNOW WERE INTODUCED AND NEW TECHNOLOGY ALLOWED PEOPLE TO BE ALIENS (AVATAR) AND THE USE OF CGI AND SPECIAL EFFECTS HAVE REVOLOUTIIONISED THE WAY WE PECEIVE CINEMA.
SO THATS THE HISTORY OF FILM AND HOW IT ALL BEGAN.
